When you need a filling

A filling repairs a tooth where decay has made a small cavity, or where a piece has chipped away. Caught early, most fillings are quick, simple and done in one visit.

How we do it

We numb the tooth gently, remove the decay, and rebuild the tooth in layers of composite shaded to match your own enamel. Each layer is set with a curing light, then shaped and polished so your bite feels natural.

You can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, usually within two to three hours.

Comfort

If injections are the part you dread, tell us. Numbing gel, a slower anaesthetic and laughing gas together make fillings a non-event for most of our nervous patients.

Questions

Questions about
tooth-coloured fillings.

Do you still use silver (amalgam) fillings?

No. We use tooth-coloured composite, bonded to the tooth. We can also replace old silver fillings when they fail or if you'd prefer them gone.

Will I feel the injection?

We numb the gum with gel first and deliver the anaesthetic slowly, which is what makes most injections uncomfortable. Many patients tell us they didn't notice it.

How long does a filling last?

A well-placed composite filling commonly lasts seven to ten years or more, depending on its size, your bite and your home care.
