Your child's first dental visit

When to book it, how to talk about it at home, and what happens in the chair.

By Dr Daniel Mwangi, Paediatric Dentist · 14 May 2026

A first dental visit should be forgettable in the best way — short, friendly and a little bit fun.

When to book

Around your child’s first birthday, or when their first teeth appear. Early visits are about getting comfortable long before anything needs fixing.

How to talk about it at home

Keep it light and ordinary. “The dentist is going to count your teeth” works well. Avoid words like “hurt”, “needle” or “brave” — they plant ideas your child didn’t have.

What happens in the chair

For toddlers, often nothing happens in the chair at all. We look at teeth with your child on your lap, count them together, and let them hold the mirror. Older children get a ride up and down in the chair and a look at the “tooth camera”.

What you can do

  • Book a morning slot when your child is rested
  • Bring a favourite toy
  • Stay calm yourself — children read us closely

If your child is anxious, we’ll go at their pace. There’s always another visit.
